Adventurer

First American to Solo Kayak and Camp in the Raja Ampat Archipelago of West Papau

Exotic global travel and the wilderness has taught me a lot about myself, the world, and the human condition.

This Raja Amapt expedition was one of those trips where, at times, I wondered what the heck I was doing. The archipelago is the last tropical frontier, with 1,500 islands, cays and shoals resting near the island of Papua New Guinea. It took me three days to just get there, and then I assembled my foldable kayak and paddled and camped for several days. The sun was dangerously hot, the waters were rich with sea life, and the villagers shy but welcoming.

Heading into the wild, or flying to exotic places overseas, isn’t for everyone. So, if you’re an armchair traveler, here are some of the things I’ve done that are a bit out-of-the ordinary. I hope these adventures will make you smile, and along the journey, perhaps you’ll see something new and wonderful.
